Jaco: The Film - A Note From Robert Trujillo
Saw Mike there jamming with Sco. 55 Grand Street was a very cool hang with great musicians free to explore their creativity. 55 Christopher was great too!!! Mike is a groundbreaking musician who has inspired so many.
Does anyone know where the full recording of that piece at the end of this clip can be found? Sounds great!
They're playing Funky Broadway - it's a 1983 recording from the audience at 55 Grand Street. Father's Day. ua-cam.com/video/YC7GlSpD59w/v-deo.htmlsi=DGsXSvXxwn_lopKN&t=1450
@@JacoTheFilm Thanks! So great to be able to hear this.. listening now! Also, great documentary! Really enjoyed it.
I guess the 55 Grand and the 55 Bar (closed now) are two different places ?
Yes - 55 Grand Street is the address of the former which was SW Soho. 55 Bar was on 55 Christopher Street in the West Village. Jaco played at 55 Grand. Jaco's sons often played at 55 Bar.
Beautiful memory of being invited down to 55 Grand by John Scofield in 1982, after taking a lesson with him. Watched him play with Joe Lovano that night. A few months later I watched Mike Stern play with Billy Cobham at the Bottom Line. Those were Magical Days in NYC!
Beautiful memory of being invited to 55 Grand in 1982 by John Scofield, after a lesson I'd taken with him. Watched him play with Joe Lovano that night. Magic.
Mike Stern for President! Rock on!
I wish there were smart phones with vid cameras back then …
55 Grand Street was the first place I saw Mike Stern …. The same time I first saw JACO …,. The WORD OF MOUTH tour Kenwood (or Kenward ? Spell check ) Denard on drums …. MUSTAFA on trumpet …. Alex Foster in Sax …. And as guest ..some Drum Core Team from a University in Florida …
Its fun till its not. Rip JP. Mike- tremendous talent. Generous human being. 🙏
1982-83: I was 18-19, playing with a samba band Jaco loved. He invited us (Grupo Batucada) to join Word of Mouth band onstage at 55 Grand. One night after the set I sat at the bar BETWEEN my two heroes Jaco and Sterno. I simply couldn’t believe my luck. I was a bright eyed young drummer/percussionist living the dream… till I realized…these cats were all stringy haired hanging over their faces and pretty much incoherent … I was pretty naive and just thought…”Wow…these guys seem pretty wiped out …”… the conversation was severely limited and the music DID suffer … right then I figured… maybe that type of hang ain’t for me, even if these guys are really geniuses, I mean REALLY geniuses !!! ❤️🥁🎶😎
this bit of film beautifully captures the ambivalence of people who got crazy with drugs and alcohol. They know for sure their playing is way better now that they are sober, but the memories of how much dangerous fun they had when they were totally wasted still brings a smile.
I saw and heard Mike with Jaco's band , I love them both, but that was one of the most disappointing nights of my life. They were both totally wasted and stunk the joint up big time. Luckily Mike straightened himself out and is doing well. In hindsight it all seems clear, but at the time, we didn't know about Jaco's slow motion suicide. What a tragedy . . . . . . .
He is an amazing musician but play to white for me, no swing , no bluesy notes , like Europeu music. I studied his methody. I learn some great lines but to cold for me. I'm studying Benson, Wes, Barney kessel,Metheny. It's more Organic ,more intuitive and more dinamic.
I think he swings like hell.. love his playing.. different strokes for different folks
Joe was the best of the best. He set an incredibly high bar.
Exactly correct Joe! Clones have helped destroy the essence of Jazz! No stories of their own. They make good sidemen or ladies though. Especially when they giggle.. quite entertaining!
Decades ago, I heard Joe Diorio at a jazz club in the L.A. area. In addition to being one of the best, he was easily the fastest guitar player I've ever heard.
Joe Diorio - most famous person ever to come from my "hometown", Waterbury CT
Watertown here!
🥴
"I'm not saying that I'm a great BeBop player..." Are you kidding me? You are one of the best BeBop players ever... 😊
Wasn't it a Santana concert? I used to troll the absolute s#!+ Luc Havan. I think I ordered like 50 pizzas to his house
Charlie was physically thrown out of Birdland and was banned from the club
I'm sorry, am I the only one waiting for Jake and Elwood to come out? 😂
Wayne was a big inspiration for the Blues Brothers. Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi were fans.
Me too! 😂
Thank you Robert from the bottom of my heart for digging up all this footage and creating this movie about Jaco, you are a gem of a human being! ❤
Thank you again Robert for honoring Jaco.
You did your best Jaco. Rip Angel Of Music.
He most definitely did.
A supporter of Donald Trump would never agree to this because it's true. .
What drugs are you on?
I don't suck trump
Trump Derangement Syndrome. Get help man.
@@blacklicorice1833 , instead of arguing with you on this I'm going to tell you that I think the Republicans and the Democrats are both tearing our nation to shreds with their greed and cowardice. I won't defend the Democrats. But I sure as hell ain't going to stop attacking Trump and his dumbass supporters.
Say it man!
100%
You are so spot on, Lenny! Thankfully we now have the likes of Snarky Puppy, Cory Wong, et all, that produce all that wonderfull funk.
Certes il y a eu Jaco, grand merci et bravo, mais de nos jours il y a Mononeon !.. et pour un bon bout de temps encore... si Dieu lui prête vie. 😌
can someone translate to spanish?:(
ill definitely check it out......
Too bad Lenny had to play with such a hack Bass Player 😂
I worked with jaco A lot He loved jamerson Paul mccartney
Whatever that was has definitely been passed down to Felix! He's a monster and I feel he's surpassed his father. He is a humble man to
If it wasn't for Jaco, I'd still be playing my bass around my knees!
jonas hellborg is no good , he would like to play like jaco did but he never could ! lol sorry ! i saw him 3 times even with maclo! he plays on one chord slappin in E !
same with matteo m...
Why do jazz musicians always look so freaking cool. They have the greatest sense of style.
Bootsy isn't a Jazz player😂
He still is a Hepcat!
@@peterjanjanin9883 Ok sorry. I've only been to one real jazz concert in my life so I don't know a whole lot about it. He sure seems like a jazz player to me tho.
@EM-mw2qr no worries. Bootsy used to play for James Brown, too. He's definitely Jazz influenced, but Parliament/Funkadelic is a funk band
@EM-mw2qr I have a Bootsy tattoo along with Jaco, Flea, and Rob Trujillo 😂
Sure Jaco was brilliant but if not for DINO, DESI AND BILLY we would not have had the Jaco we knew, admired and loved - Dino Martin was the bass player in Dino, Desi and Billy and he broke knew ground - even James Jamerson was influenced by him - as was Jaco - Jaco copped many of Dino's bass lines, his intonation, his sense of dynamic - there are bootleg tapes of Miles jamming with Dino, Desi and Billy that are other worldly
Where was Sting when Jaco was homeless sitting on a blanket on 6th Ave in the Village NYC? We 14 yr olds from the H.S. of Music and Art used to cut classes and buy him cheeseburgers from McD’s across the street. 😢
See whatever the mind can conceive....the will can achieve... RIP brother 🙏🏻 see you have NOT been forgotten
Love you & your superior drumming skills, Lenny!
Btw Ornette showed Charlie harmelodics....that's singing your tune while support ING loving the band
geddy is a Hero too. My group the NOWtet plays led zep in a jazz quintet... Lorraine Gordon at the village vanguard said if I'm gonna have covers in my club it will be Parker n Porter not Page n plant..ha lol her loss?
I met n played with Jaco...1987. While studying with Ron Carter..we went to sweet Basil to see Charlie HADEN.....Saw him lose it all. N get kikd out. I asked Charlie cuz Ron Said he Charlie played Crudely You never play a wrong note n he said Depends on the note before n after n Jaco hugged Charlie
Flea expresses him self really intelligently
Thank you Lenny. For your wisdom And knowledge And great understanding Let the god of Abraham, Has given you Brother Henry In Humboldt county California
Beautiful words.
I wonder if Flea and Jaco hung out in the mid 80's
